ABSTRACT
The term ‘Uralic’ refers to a language family spoken across north-eastern Europe and western Siberia, with a geographic outlier, Hungarian, in central Europe; see Map 27.1. The family is sometimes also referred to as ‘Finno-Ugric’, though strictly speaking this is a traditional term for the family minus its Samoyedic branch.
