ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book outlines the aims and purpose of Materialities and Mobilities in Education. From the perspective of human geography, there has been somewhat of a resurgence of interest in issues relating to education over the past 15 years. The book argues that materialities and mobilities should be considered co-constitutive of contemporary societies. This argument is pursued through a focus on a range of contemporary scholarship on education. Education is a preeminent 'site' for the development of theory-building and testing around the co-constitutive nature of materiality and mobility. Educationalists themselves have addressed questions about how space and place affect processes of learning and other social processes connected to education. Within education, over recent years, interest in issues related to space and place has grown - perhaps influenced by what has been called the 'spatial turn' since the mid-1980s.
