ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes two curriculum models and the disruption of teachers’ professionalism and teaching practices. It reports on the implementation of a language education policy for teaching primary school students. The book reports on an English Without Borders curriculum in Brazil designed to help students interested in taking part in academic mobility programs. It reviews working with systemic functional linguistics – and specifically grammatics or metalanguage – for supporting the development of ESL/EFL students’ reading comprehension skills. The book discusses issues in the implementation of content and language integrated learning. It reports on a curriculum specifically developed for students enrolled in bilingual secondary school programs to study geography and history in English.
