ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the emotional and mental health aspects of migration for children and adolescents, and discusses the challenges of cultural integration for young people's mental health, and explores educational and cognitive aspects of multilingualism. International migration is a global phenomenon that is growing in scope, complexity and impact. Migration is both a cause and effect of broader development processes and an intrinsic feature of their ever globalising world. Acculturation is the process of cultural and psychological change that follows intercultural contact. Cultural changes, affecting a group's customs and their economic and political life combine with psychological changes, such as individual's attitudes toward the acculturation process, their cultural identities and social behaviours in relation to the groups in contact. A foundational principle of multiculturalism is the emphasis on cultural diversity. In contrast, migrants are more supportive of the ideal of multiculturalism since it offers many advantages to them, such as maintaining their culture and obtaining higher social status in society.
