ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that newspaper reporting remains a crucial set of practices and values within the field—for journalists and for others who now find themselves in the field's orbit. It explains why reporting continues to have traction in a fast-changing field. The chapter begins with a brief discussion of changes that have taken place in newspaper journalism as it migrates to digital environments. The reporting that takes place at newspapers, this is to say, is a keystone of the journalistic field. To understand newspaper reporting's continued relevance, it helps to place it within the broad context of the journalistic field. New publishers have entered the journalistic field from contiguous social fields, especially political and civil society and the market. The growth of published news coupled with the destabilization of journalism has had predictable consequences for newspapers. They now find themselves 'cheek to jowl' with more and different kinds of news publishers.
