ABSTRACT

This chapter reports findings of a content analysis of photographs of Paralympic athletes appearing in popular Australian and Brazilian newspapers during the 2012 Paralympic Games—the quantity of photographs depicted, their representation of gender, common photographic angles employed and the visibility and type of disability depicted. The more progressive representations in the Brazilian media can be seen to be part of a spectacularization in preparation for the 2016 Paralympic Games held in Brazil—increasing audience identification and, in this case, selling tickets to the Paralympic Games. Australian newspapers did not have the same commercial interests.
