ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines case studies that show how people with disabilities produce media to change attitudes about disabled people, advance disability civil rights and affect government policy. In Afghanistan, a radio show produced by and about people with disabilities helped move the People with Disabilities Law forward in 2010. In China, blind activists started an organization dedicated to educating and advocating for the rights of disabled people and to promoting their inclusion in employment. And in Somalia, a disability rights organization learned how to work with the media to help them understand why it is important to cover disability issues more comprehensively and accurately.
