ABSTRACT

Over the last few decades, English has reached its role of lingua franca in many settings, including the academic world. Several authors have explained the main features of the conference presentation (CP) in comparison to some other spoken academic genres, such as lectures, or genres within the field of written academic discourse. In 2005 Albelda Marco and the works she refers to, the use of adverbs as modifiers of adjectives is considered to be one of the main resources of intensification. This chapter identifies the most common intensifiers that modify the adjectives that speakers use in their presentations, paying special attention to the paralinguistic and kinesic resources. It aims to explore linguistic and nonlinguistic features in a set of spoken academic events. This kind of analysis that focuses on the observation of real academic events allows us to go deeper into the multimodal dimension of intensification in spoken academic discourse, thus providing an important contribution to applied linguistics.
