ABSTRACT

This book explores how languages and literacies are implicated in the complex relationship between place and mobility. Book titles are always carefully chosen; choices to include or exclude terms are strategies in the delineation of territories. Boundaries define what is ‘in’ a particular territory and therefore belongs there. To illustrate, recently this author attended a meeting at which wording of proposed conference themes was being discussed. One committee member asked: “Do we have to use the word ‘literacy’?” In this case, a boundary was being reinforced between the field of TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and the field of literacy studies. Within these boundaries, insider ways are naturalised. Mobility concerns what travels through and between territories, crossing boundaries and in the process potentially de-naturalising taken-forgranted ways of being.
