ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues related to triggering of a Directed Motivational Current (DMC), looking at instances of both positive and negative triggers, and have set out the primary conditions one believe need to be in place for a triggering factor to exert an influence; and so to spark a DMC. Even when the necessary personal and environmental conditions are in place, a specific triggering stimulus is nevertheless needed for the motivational surge of a DMC to come into being. People consider the self-propelling nature of the processes within the hyperdrive itself, emphasizing in particular the importance of the continual re-triggering mechanism of the DMC pathway as stemming from the chronically accessible nature of individuals goals/visions within their working self-concept. During a DMC, the target goal/vision is more frequently activated, and not only in situations where L2 learning or the L2 culture are obviously in focus, but also more widely, in other ordinary situations in one's everyday life as well.
