ABSTRACT

In an author's note to readers at the back of her book, That was then, this is now (Hinton, 1998) originally published when she was 22, S. E. Hinton wrote in 2007:

The difference between the years sixteen and twenty are almost as great as the difference in the years between eleven and sixteen. You learn things. Sometimes hard things. You learn the so-called right thing is not the right thing. You learn there will be roads to choose, some you never believed you would travel.
