ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the gender dimensions of agriculture and food security, as they intersect with the goals of sustainable development. It provides an overview of the main themes that have been studied in the gender, environment, and development field for over four decades. The chapter also provides the necessary knowledge to inform public debates, with the hope of influencing decision-making processes, policy development, and planning. It presents a brief historical overview of the gender equality debate in agriculture. Gender equality, sustainable agricultural development, and food security are interconnected and critically important to sustainable development. Despite increased attention and commitments to promote gender equality, inequalities in agricultural and food security systems prevail. Failure to translate gender equality commitments into action is a significant hindrance for sustainable agricultural development and food security. Through the project, the the Deccan Development Society (DDS) has also set out to attain gender equality within their own families and communities.
