ABSTRACT

Eighty-seven percent of people surveyed saw a difference in the way men and women expressed their feelings, and 42% of these people thought that difference was biological. The feeling of a lack of autonomy and control over one's life is known to be associated with depression. Socially determined gender norms, roles and responsibilities place women, far more frequently than men, in situations where they have little control over important decisions concerning their lives. There are cultures where women are expected to show considerable physical prowess. One of the most harmful expectations of gender out there is that women do emotional work, and men don't. It is a well-replicated result that boys are more confident in their own abilities than girls, as are men than women. People often have opinions about ‘male’ and ‘female’ ways of working, and gendered ideas of leadership.
