ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the result of the EU referendum can largely be attributed to the consistent anti-immigration campaign led by the UK Independence Party. Analysing a corpus of 2013–2016 addresses by UKIP leader Nigel Farage shows that refugees, as well as economic migrants from EU countries, are construed as a threat to the British people and nation. This construal positions ‘Brussels’ as guaranteeing free movement of EU citizens and promoting the movement of non-EU migrants between EU countries. Using deictic othering, conceptual metaphor and proximisation to define the EU as an antagonistic entity helps UKIP strengthen their Brexit rationale.
