ABSTRACT
Reading ability is central for knowledge acquisition through construction and analysis of content meanings. It entails the skills to build text meanings and connect them to real-life knowledge. In second language reading, the reader–text interaction occurs across languages. To explore the nature of second language reading ability, this chapter examines how well-established reading ability in the first language and knowledge of the target language jointly contribute to the development of second language reading ability.
