ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses theory- and research-based practices of learning and teaching L2 speaking. After situating speaking in the theory and practice of L2 teaching in the introduction, I outline theories about knowledge and processing involved in speaking and developing speaking skills, followed by their pedagogical implications. In Section 3, I present a review of 10 selected research articles that have investigated the learning of various aspects of L2 speaking skills. Section 4 discusses general and specific implications of the research findings for the teaching of speaking. The chapter concludes with the discussion of research-driven methods and activities to teach speaking skills.
