Bangladeshi immigrants are one of the relatively new South Asian immigrant groups settling in the US, and therefore, Bangladeshi ethnic media are also a relatively new area of research. Some background information about Bangladeshi immigrants can be helpful for readers who are not familiar with Bangladeshi society. Bangladesh is a small, developing South Asian country with a population of about 160 million people. Politically, Bangladesh has a multiparty political system with two parties holding major influence. Major political parties’ foreign chapters can also be found in other countries, including the US Bangladeshi immigrants are diverse in terms of political viewpoints and religious identities. Bangladeshi web papers play a surveillance role when they run news and analysis about external threats to community members, as is the case when they report on issues of legal rights, civil rights, and crimes/actions against immigrants.
