ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the question of ‘support’ outside the traditional classroom setting, focussing on the preparation for employment and work experience for young people identified as having a special educational need or a disability. It considers the role of the paraprofessional with reference to recent research in this area. The chapter questions disempowering support practices and develops a proposal for a small participatory Action Research project, to be carried out in a specialist provision in England. The proposed project is intended to bring about changes in the way young learners are supported whilst attending the provision for their work experience.
