ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide readers with an understanding of the primary learning theories that are a foundation of social, emotional, and behavioral development and assessment tools and interventions used in schools. Authors consider children’s development of social, emotional, and behavioral skills and how such skills (or maladaptive patterns) are learned through the observation of social models and reinforcement properties within the environment. Specific examples of prevention and intervention resources and assessment tools are provided that are linked to key theories reviewed. The chapter closes with a case study, highlighting the leadership a school psychologist can provide to schools working to adopt practices that best support the social, emotional, and behavioral development of its students.
