ABSTRACT

Accessing journal entries of the deceased offers a window for meaning making in bereavement work. Thematic analysis of journal entries is suitable for individuals who possess the cognitive and emotional resources to explore the inner life of the deceased. Thematic analysis is based on the premise that humans seek meaning and want to make sense of life. Thematic analysis can be adapted for psychotherapy work with those who grieve. The guidelines for thematic analysis and accompanying questions allow for a therapeutic stance of anticipation and discovery. Thematic analysis is suited for clients who desire to enrich their understanding of the deceased through careful review of journals. For other clients, there are benefits that can be derived from a thematic analysis of published books or movies on grief/loss that are pertinent to them, such as loss of baby, child, sibling, parent or spouse.
