ABSTRACT

It may be inappropriate for young children, who could have a hard time understanding the sequence of concepts of which the Transition Cycle is composed. However, the Transition Cycle also represents the dynamics of every (brief) meeting in life on a micro level: every first meeting, every connection and every goodbye. The cyclical nature of the Transition Cycle represents the fact that after each loss, there is still potential for new-and even deeper-connections to be forged. There are many ways of working with the Transition Cycle. While standing there, clients are given the opportunity to go back to situations throughout life in which they had to deal with that particular theme by imagining situations in which that theme generated particularly strong feelings within them. The themes of the Transition Cycle are also present at a micro level in the moments of contact between counselor and client, from welcoming and forming attachments through sharing intimacy and saying goodbye.
