ABSTRACT

When indicated, sensory portal work can be implemented in individual and family counseling and in group settings. This clinical intervention draws on continuing bond (CB) theory, sensory and body trauma theory and expressive arts as a medium for creating a sensory portal to support healthy CB development. The process of constructing a sensory portal begins prior to the counseling session, with participants gathering a range of small objects, photos, cards and clothing. Gently, a client's stories are drawn together to create a flexible space of possibility for creation of a sensory portal. The time frame for constructing a sensory portal collage can be an hour or more, depending on the size of the frame and the degree of complexity. The comments were made in the period immediately after participants created their sensory portals.
