ABSTRACT

Habits of the Heart is merely one example, yet a comprehensive example, of attachment-oriented, narrative reframing. Attachment reframing is an essential strategy in emotionally focused therapy (EFT) that interprets cognitions, emotions, behaviors and relational dynamics through an attachment perspective. The goal of EFT in general and the use of attachment reframing in particular is to create connections or bonds between people who have attachment injuries or are in need of deepening bonds. Inherent in adjusting to life-changing loss, the narratives related to attachment dynamics require examination and adjustment. Connecting the possible meanings of Habits of the Heart with the relational dynamics of attachment theory can be a powerful reframe for the bereaved and a helpful tool for the therapist.
