ABSTRACT

It is applicable as an educational aid in psychology courses and for individuals who are not actively grieving yet who are willing to prepare for approaching or future losses. The technique of entering into a dialogue with other texts is a significant literary device used in the grief memoir, a literary genre that has been solidifying its position for the last two decades. The discourse with other texts practiced by grief memoirists inspired the response writing technique presented here. It consists of framing a few questions that prompt engagement with one or more grief memoirs, read in their entirety or in excerpts provided by the mentor. The excerpts of the dialogue presented here show how grief narratives can be an accessible and apt inspirational source for reflection on mortality and grief validation for the student or client and mentor alike.
