ABSTRACT

Adults who are open to writing about their grief process and are able to be self-reflective can benefit from this flexible technique. Implementing a Writing to Heal group is especially beneficial to bereaved participants who tend to shy away from traditional grief support groups but would like to participate in a healing practice within a supportive community. One of the many benefits of the group is that it attracts introverted personality types in addition to extraverts because there is no pressure to read what the participant has written, and there is adequate space to reflect on one's own grief process. The Writing to Heal group leader must facilitate the group by creating a safe environment for bereaved participants to spend time reflecting on their inner voice of wisdom as they seek the intersection of their grief process with the poems or creative writing prompts.
