ABSTRACT

Grief is one of the most emotionally painful but natural responses to losing a loved one. The Persistent Complex Bereavement Inventory was subsequently developed to assist this line of empirical inquiry. This chapter appears to reflect core grief reactions that occur when a person is separated from an attachment figure. If the purpose of using the PCBI is to quantify the severity level of PCBD symptoms, then a dimensional approach to scoring is recommended. Therefore, the clinician may choose not to emphasize the death itself as a principal focus of intervention. Accordingly, in Rachel's case, a clinician might focus on reviewing the experience of her mother's death, including its unexpected and potentially unjust nature, as well as the fact that it resulted from negligent action on the part of a presumably trusted medical professional. Despite sharing a diagnosis of PCBD, Rachel and Jenna’s symptomatic profiles differ substantially.
