ABSTRACT

The goal of this chapter is to explore if bilingual/multilingual education indicates that bilingualism/multilingualism can be one method that helps reduce prejudice and increase cultural acceptance. The barely known multilingual education of Val d’Aran (Catalonia, Spain) will be presented, with two local minority official languages: Aranes and Catalan, as well as Spanish and French as the mediums of instruction in the curriculum. This case study examines the perceptions of native and non-native students towards the multilingual educational model, their national/cultural identity-ies, and their views about the local language and society. The positive results of this study could reinforce the belief that multilingual education could be the key to diminishing discrimination and prejudice early in life in classrooms by helping students gain multicultural and linguistic awareness.
