ABSTRACT

Rockaway Tales is an on-site storytelling app that launches video interviews through GPS location. This enables visitors to the Rockaways, in Queens, New York, to experience stories about Hurricane Sandy while walking through the neighborhood where these events took place. The app contains nine videos that are situated at various locations throughout the area. In this way, the landscape serves as a repository for memories of Sandy. The stories reach from the oceanfront to the bayside. They encompass the range of emotions experienced when Sandy hit as well as the aftermath and the efforts in rebuilding. These stories highlight how people react in times of chaos. They describe fear, anxiety, and disorientation, as well as perseverance, generosity, and the strength of community.
