ABSTRACT

Employers and policymakers are concerned that the current national education system is not fostering workforce readiness. They view the pool of graduates entering the workforce as weak in several domains of knowledge and skill. The National Research Council (NRC) committee defined “deeper learning” as the process through which an individual becomes capable of taking what was learned in one situation and applying it to new situations. Deeper learning in K-12 and higher education would begin to address the employer concerns identified above, helping students develop both knowledge and skills in the core subjects of reading and writing, mathematics, and science. The body of research on intra- and interpersonal competencies is younger, less extensive, and less rigorous than the literature on deeper learning and acquisition of cognitive competencies. The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was developed, refined, and validated over a 10-year period with funding from the US Department of Education.
