ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the situation within Australia and New Zealand in relation to the education of gifted students in rural/remote settings. The review of rural education by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation, a number of salient points were raised in relation to differing outcomes between urban and rural students. Addressing the needs of gifted students is not an easy undertaking in any environment; however, the literature points to specific challenges associated with rurality. Quality teachers are particularly important for rural gifted students, but they require specific knowledge and skills in relation to providing for gifted students in rural environments. Within Australia and New Zealand, there is a growing body of literature on the topic of gifted Indigenous students, which tends to be a subset of the rural gifted literature. The chapter provides an entry for meaningful scholarship on the topic of rural gifted in an Australian and New Zealand context.
