ABSTRACT

This is a large order of predominantly freshwater fishes found worldwide in low latitudes. There are eight families of which the Aplocheilidae (=Rivulidae), Fundulidae, Anablepidae, Poecilidae, and Cyprinodontidae have representatives that occur in brackish and coastal marine waters (Nelson 1994). Rosen (1973) provides a key to salt tolerant species as does the more recent FAO guide: Rivulidae (Ghedotti & Wiley 2003a), Fundulidae (Wiley & Ghedotti 2003a), Anablepidae (Ghedotti & Wiley 2003b), Poecilidae (Ghedotti & Wiley 2003c), and Cyprinodontidae (Wiley & Ghedotti 2003b).
