ABSTRACT
According to chemical theories of the ancient Greeks, all matter was made up of four elements: earth, air, fire and water. The Pythagoreans and Aristotle added a fifth element, ether, of which the heavenly bodies are supposedly composed. In their search for a fifth element, alchemists made extensive investigations of the volatile oils of herbs and spices. These oils are still referred to as essential oils (1).
