ABSTRACT

Plants protect themselves from insect pests with chemical and physical defenses that directly influence pest performance. In addition, plants, protect themselves indirectly through traits that attract natural enemies. The different groups of plant secondary metabolites involved in these processes have been discussed in the previous chapters. Screening, identification, and testing of the bioactivity of plant secondary metabolites active against pests is a continuous process; hence, newer compounds are added to the existing list. A detailed study on the biosynthetic pathway, bioactivities in various groups of insects, and mode of action are lacking for some of the compounds reported. The details available on these compounds are presented in this chapter. Among these, epicuticular lipids are discussed under different subheadings, whereas other compounds are presented without any subheadings for lack of information.
