ABSTRACT
This chapter begins with smart cities (SCs), which have been considered the wave of the future. It covers smart home, which is the main building block of SCs, and smart energy, which is a basic necessity in the modern society. The chapter discusses smart transportation as an important component of the SC. It addresses smart agriculture for solving problems in the oldest sector of the US economy. The chapter covers smart university which is an emerging concept to promote modernization of universities all over the world. It explains that IoT is one of the basic underlying technologies in each of these smart technologies. An SC relies on a collection of smart computing technologies. Two closely related technologies, connectivity networks (IoT) and big data analytics (BDA), enable the transformation of traditional cities into SCs. Smart home is the main building block of SCs and intelligent communities.
