ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to geometric shape feature extraction techniques. Different simple geometric shape feature extraction techniques such as center of gravity, axis of least inertia, digital bending energy, eccentricity, circularity ratio, elliptic variance, rectangularity, convexity, solidity, Euler number, profiles and hole area ratio are discussed step by step. Various eccentricity methods such as principal axis methods and minimum bounding rectangle methods are included in this chapter. Different ellipticity methods such as ellipse variance and ellipticity based on moment invariants and various rectangularity methods like the smallest bounding rectangle, rectangular discrepancy method and the robust smallest bounding rectangle are also discussed. The benefits and limitations of each method is included. All the techniques are easy to understand for those who are new to the research field as most are described with equations and pictorial representations.
