ABSTRACT
This chapter is devoted to various applications of shape features in pattern recognition in the area of digit recognition, character recognition, leaf recognition, fruit recognition and hand gesture recognition. A shape descriptor tries to assess the shape in ways that are consistent with human perception. Good accuracy of retrieval involves a shape descriptor’s ability to obtain similar shapes from a database effectively. The descriptors are usually in a vector form. The steps to use the shape features for recognition are explained. All the recognition techniques are described with some pictorial representations, making them easy to understand.
