ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 presents a detailed classification of emerging pollutants based on their origin and level of toxicity. This introductory chapter discusses health hazards originating from EPs in various wastewater sources based on WHO guidelines and possible ecological threat. A section is dedicated to explaining the need to recognize the existence of EPs and treatment methods requirements. This chapter also presents various definitions and considerations regarding emerging pollutants which are broadly understood and classified as synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals, substances of synthetic origin and biologically active microorganisms that are not commonly monitored or regulated in the ecological environment with potentially known or suspected adverse ecological and human health effects. This chapter also includes a detailed list of EPs from various sources and categories. The impact of these EPs on the environment and human health are also discussed in detailed. The final section provides an overview of possible analytical technical tools to detect and identify the EPs in various wastewater resources.
