ABSTRACT

According to recent studies, thousands of emerging pollutants (EPs) are diffusing into various aquatic environments and ecosystems through different point sources. EPs are those substances that are not frequently monitored but have the potential to enter the environment and cause adverse health and ecological effects. On the other hand, access to safe and clean drinking water is essential to health, a basic human right and a component of an effective policy for health protection. To achieve this a combined effort of regulations and management measures with respect to the production, use and discharge of EPs into the environment and tracking their occurrence in the environment is fundamental to reach an efficient water resource management. Therefore, this chapter discusses the importance of monitoring, policy framing and their implementations on controlling the production, use and discarding of EPs into the environment.
