ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to give a detailed account of list and working of conventional technique for various industrial wastewater treatments. This chapter gives an overview of physical, phyco-chemical, chemical and biological methods of treating various EP-contaminated water. In each section, technological advantages, challenges and limitations associated with the use of each method, technique and the protocols are discussed. Here, properties of individual EPs and their metabolized forms are discussed for better understanding of their behaviours on the environment. This chapter also discusses the effects of EPs on human health and the environment at large. Limitations of EPs detection in various forms and sources is listed in a separate section. This chapter listed the conventional water disinfection methods adopted for disinfecting contaminated surface and groundwater. This chapter details primary and secondary methods that are effective against the reclamation and treatment of wastewater. In primary treatment techniques, several device-based methods are discussed with an overview of advantages, limitations and need for innovation among the individual methods. Several methods discussed, such as screening, comminuting, floating, grit removal, trickling, oxidation, neutralization, advanced oxidation process, ozonisation, coagulations, etc., have proven effective against conventional pollutants. The need for advanced treatment techniques and possible alternatives are also discussed in this chapter.
