ABSTRACT

Efficient management of safety can only be realised when it is an integrated part of the way a company does business. Health, safety, and environment (HSE) staff perform a support function that helps in developing and implementing a company's experience feedback systems. Adaptive safety management can be a promising area for the prevention of incidents. In high-income countries, foreign workers from middle- and low-income countries represent a safety challenge due to language and cultural issues. Western companies operating in developing countries also experience safety management challenges related to differences in culture, governance issues, and poor physical infrastructures. Cloud computing has already made collection and sharing of accident data even more efficient and also promotes multi-organisational sharing of data within industrial sectors. Information and communication technology (ICT) represents an opportunity to improve online monitoring and application of safety performance indicators. Software agents, or smart agents, have the potential to guide decision-makers more efficiently.
