ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on utilizing technology and various cutting-edge applications to promote and encourage sustainability. It looks at urban planning and smart growth. The chapter discusses the basic tenets of what smart growth is and why it is important to move in that direction for the future. It introduces the concept of the Smart Grid and what its implementation will mean for the country as a whole, and what opportunities it will provide for every individual. The replacement of conventional zoning codes that control land use with those that control physical form can benefit sustainable growth and development. Encouraging businesses, nonprofits, governments, and cultural institutions to locate their offices and other facilities within the urban core as opposed to suburban or fringe locations can support sustainable urban development. Urban trees are a critical part of green infrastructure systems and provide a range of benefits.
