ABSTRACT

EVERY TIME WE SUMMARIZE data, we are representingthem by a statistic. The mean is a statistic that tells us wherethe middle of the data is by adding them all up and dividing by the number of observations, and likewise the median is a statistic: the value that has half the data above (or equal to) it and half below (or equal to) it. The percentage of data falling in a category is also a statistic. Technically, even the counts shown in the height of a histogram’s bars are statistics.
