ABSTRACT

Executive summary: The evolutionary development (EVO) methodology was developed by the well-known software researcher and author Tom Gilb in the 1970s. Since Tom is British by birth and now lives in Norway, he speaks at many European events. As a result, EVO is more widely used in Europe than elsewhere. However, EVO concepts were found in IBM’s Cleanroom development methodology and are also used by Hewlett Packard for their internal software development. Gilb asserts that EVO is embedded into military standard MIL-498 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard ISO-12207. Some features of EVO have found their way into the Agile family, such as designing and building software in small packages with user value rather than as one large application.
