ABSTRACT

Executive summary: The term “computer-aided software engineering” (CASE) was a very hot topic in the 1980s, when dozens of companies were intrigued by the concept. Many start-up companies entered a growing market for CASE tools. Some survived, but many failed. CASE stumbled due to the endemic software industry problems of poor measurement practices and making vast claims for productivity and quality without actual empirical data to back up the claims. That being said, CASE still exists in 2016, even though the name is no longer popular. Many useful tools were created, and that process was beneficial.
