ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a reasonably thorough introduction to some useful tools for accomplishing this task—i.e., for getting data into R session—and those for the closely related task of saving results to external data files that can be used by others. Datasets containing automobile gas mileage data are available from the datasets package as the mtcars data frame, and from the MASS package as the Cars93 data frame. The chapter gives introductory overviews of three Internet data examples, based on three different file formats: a CSV file containing unclaimed Canadian bank account data. The BigMac index is available as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, and it was downloaded from the Internet on 9-September-2015, using the browseURL function to access the web page, clicking on the appropriate link to download the file, and copying the file from the download directory into the current working directory.
