ABSTRACT

The Internet can be viewed from two perspectives. The “service” view and the “nuts and bolts” view. In the service view, the Internet provides a communication infrastructure that enables various distributed applications, such as, email, games, and e-commerce. In this chapter, we examine services like email, file transfer, real-time user communication (Internet telephony and Internet Relay Chat), remote log-in, newsgroup services, and the Web, which are accessed by means of the Internet.
