ABSTRACT

Changes of Gibbs energies are additive. This property has the very important consequence for the purpose that an endergonic reaction may become possible when it is driven by an exergonic reaction. This is often the case for biochemical reactions evolving in bioenergetics. Of course, some conditions must be satisfied. Notice that the coupling is possible not only because of the mentioned values of Gibbs energies but also because there is a common reactant or product in both reactions. In chemistry, the phenomenon is named “equilibrium displacement”.
