These days there is tremendous interest in micro-and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS) technology. After all, who doesn’t get excited at the thought of nanorobots coursing through veins, repairing damaged cells, or smart dust drifting through the air sniffing out pollutants? Who isn’t tickled by the idea of microneedles that deliver painless injections or nanostructured water-repellent blue jeans as soft as cotton? Micro-and nanoelectromechanical systems technology promises all of this and much more.
