ABSTRACT

Cold morning on Aztec Peak Fire Lookout. First, build fire in old stove. Second, start coffee. Then, heat up last night’s pork chops and spinach for breakfast. Why not? And why the hell not?

There is an abundance of devices that utilize thermal effects. From measuring mass-flow rates with a thermal anemometer [115, 144, 145, 161, 164, 185, 197], to writing data onto a polycarbonate disk using heated cantilevers [33, 104], to providing a motive force for six-legged, insect-like microrobots [105, 106], researchers are continually exploring new ways of using thermal and thermally driven effects.
