ABSTRACT

Training provides the skills required to operate and maintain the equipment in the manner intended by both the manufacturer and the mine management (site and corporate). With practise (and feedback), skills become automatic, and this automaticity frees the operator to attend to sensory information indicating the development of abnormal situations, potentially in time to alter behaviour, or take action in time to avoid unwanted consequences, be they injury, equipment damage, and/or production delays. Training also provides the knowledge and cognitive skills required to undertake problem solving such as fault diagnosis, or choosing the correct response in an emergency situation. Again, practise and feedback are required.
